Federal Disability Retirement is a benefit that is available under the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) for all Federal and Postal employees. It is a benefit which is accessible after a person has reached 18 months of creditable Federal Service. Many people confuse Federal Disability Retirement with “Social Security Disability”, or with Worker’s Compensation benefits. FERS Disability Retirement is distinct and different from either of those “other” benefits. For one thing, unlike Social Security Disability, under FERS Disability Retirement, a Federal or Postal employee does not have to be “totally disabled”, but merely prove that you are no longer able to perform one or more of the essential elements of one’s Federal or Postal job. Second, unlike Worker’s Compensation (or otherwise known as OWCP), the injury or medical condition does not have to be “work-related”. In other words, you do not have to prove “causation” in order to qualify for Federal Disability Retirement benefits under FERS.

As each individual suffers from a medical condition unique to his or her personal circumstances, so the approach that an applicant for Federal Disability Retirement benefits must take should specifically address such individual circumstances.
